How We Make Every Piece

  • Mixing the Metal

    Mixing the Metal

    Copper and zinc are melted together in a furnace to form brass. The molten metal is cast into sheets or blocks, ready to be worked by hand.

  • Shaping by Hand

    Shaping by Hand

    Artisans cut, beat and turn the metal into shape over anvils and wooden moulds. Every curve is formed by hand, which gives each piece its strength and character.

    Polishing & Etching the Motif

    Each piece is polished to bring out brass's warm golden glow. Artisans then etch traditional motifs into the surface by hand, so no two designs are exactly alike.

What can I burn in it?

Loban (benzoin), dhoop powder, guggal, sambrani cups, frankincense or dhoop cones, placed on a lit charcoal disc.

How do I use it?

Put a thin layer of sand or ash at the bottom. Light a charcoal disc and place it on top, add a small pinch of loban, then close the peacock lid. The jaali lets the fragrance out gently.

Can I carry it around during aarti?

It's designed as a tabletop burner and doesn't have a handle. To take the fragrance through the house, let it burn in one place with the lid open, or wait until it's cool enough to lift by the base with a cloth.

Where should I place it?

On a heat-resistant surface such as stone, tile or a brass thali. Avoid placing it directly on wood, glass or fabric, because the base gets warm.

How do I clean ash and sticky resin?

Once it's fully cool, tip out the ash. For sticky resin, soak the bowl in warm, soapy water for 15 minutes, then clean it with a soft brush. Dry it completely.

How do I get more or less smoke?

With the lid on, the smoke comes out softly through the jaali. For a stronger dhuni, lift the lid off. Add loban a pinch at a time rather than all at once.

What if I change my mind?

Why does it turn dark?

It ages naturally, like good leather does. That darkening is actually protective, not damage. It is called Patina, oxidation of metal.
