How We Make Every Piece

  • Mixing the Metal

    Mixing the Metal

    Copper and zinc are melted together in a furnace to form brass. The molten metal is cast into sheets or blocks, ready to be worked by hand.

  • Shaping by Hand

    Shaping by Hand

    Artisans cut, beat and turn the metal into shape over anvils and wooden moulds. Every curve is formed by hand, which gives each piece its strength and character.

  • Polishing & Etching the Motif

    Polishing & Etching the Motif

    Each piece is polished to bring out brass's warm golden glow. Artisans then etch traditional motifs into the surface by hand, so no two designs are exactly alike.

What's in the set?

Each set has a brass tumbler and its dabra, the wide bowl it sits in. Choose a Set of 1 or a Set of 2.

How much coffee does the tumbler hold?

Each tumbler holds about 100 ml, a standard serving of filter coffee.

What is the dabra for?

Pour the coffee back and forth between the tumbler and dabra. It cools the coffee to a sippable temperature and builds the frothy top filter kaapi is known for.

Does the tumbler get hot to hold?

Brass warms up with hot drinks, which is why it comes with a dabra. Hold the tumbler by its rim, or let the drink cool for a moment in the dabra first.

Is brass safe for coffee?

Yes, for serving. Don't leave coffee standing in it for hours, and wash it the same day.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand-wash only. It takes a minute and keeps it beautiful for decades.

Why does it turn dark?

It ages naturally, like good leather does. That darkening is actually protective, not damage. It is called Patina, oxidation of metal.

How long will it last?

Decades, easily. Maybe your grandkids will cook on it. That's how long we build for.
